Everything You Need to Know About the Charleston City Market
Charleston City Market History
In 1788, a piece of land was given to the city to create a 100-foot-wide merchant space between Meeting Street and the Cooper River. What was then called the “Centre Market” rented stands to local vendors for just 25 cents a week! Over the course of the next 230 years, the market slowly evolved into the Charleston City Market that we know and love today. The market features a newly refurbished and air-conditioned Great Hall that is home to 20 new and returning merchants. If you’ve never been, this historic slice of Charleston is an absolute must!
What You’ll Find at the Market
From the gourmet eats of Caviar and Bananas to the toys and trinkets of Wonder Works, there’s a little something for everyone at the Charleston City Market. You can walk through the aisles and admire work from local artists and craftsman or even purchase a traditional sweetgrass basket woven from the locally-harvested, bulrush marsh grass. The market presents a beautiful combination of modern and antique shopping, embodying the eclectic culture of the Charleston community. Immerse yourself in the distinct charm of Charleston on your next visit!

Easy to get to and hard to leave, the Charleston City Market is an unforgettable Holy City experience.
