What is the South Carolina Historical Society?

Museum Exhibits

The South Carolina Historical Society was established in 1855 as a way to preserve the history of the state. The organization is home to an extensive collection of manuscripts, research, letters, and other historical artifacts, which are kept in the special collections area of the College of Charleston Library. In addition, the South Carolina Historical Society has a museum located on Meeting Street, where visitors can explore exhibits related to the state and city’s history. Currently, the museum is displaying the Cultures Converge exhibit, which focuses on the early settlement years. You can also explore the Division and Strife exhibit centered around the Civil War era and the Charleston Recovers exhibit demonstrating how the city was rebuilt after the war.
