Your Guide to the Volvo Car Open Tennis Tournament
About the Tournament
For nearly 20 years, Charleston has opened its doors to the Women’s Tennis Association for the Volvo Car Open. Before the tournament’s partnership with Volvo, the tournament was held in Hilton Head, with the first event held in 1973. The early years of the tournament were groundbreaking for women’s tennis during a period of uncertainty in women’s sports. As the first tournament to offer over 100,000 dollars in prize money, it opened the door for young women that dreamt of playing professional tennis. Today, over 90,000 spectators attend the tournament each year, and the prize money for the winner is 776,000 dollars.
About the Contestants
Every year, the Volvo Car Open attracts some of the best competitors in women’s tennis. Past winners have included Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, and Kiki Bertens.
